Rounding out the “Fantastic Four” Summer 2022 interns, VLJ shines a spotlight on intern Ryan Campbell. Ryan attended Fordham University for undergrad where he double majored in Political Science and Philosophy with a minor in Peace & Justice studies. Putting his undergraduate education and experience to good use, Ryan has held roles in law and politics since graduating. Currently, Ryan is a rising 2L at Rutgers Law-Camden.
Ryan first heard the “good word” about VLJ through Rutgers and the rest is history. During his internship Ryan supports VLJ’s Tenancy Program.
Ryan said he enjoys working with clients in an important field of law that is rapidly changing, and he also appreciates how welcoming VLJ staff have been and how willing they are to mentor and educate him.
In the fast-paced and ever-changing field of tenancy and eviction defense, it can be hard to think of one specific case or client that resonates (because so many do), but Ryan mentioned that working on the VLJ Tenancy Hotline three days a week gave him ample opportunity to interact with VLJ’s diverse community of clients, all with their own unique cases. To round out his experience on the Tenancy Hotline, Ryan was able to learn from VLJ’s Tenancy Program attorneys on how they handle all of the different situations that come through the Hotline.
Everyone comes to VLJ for different reasons, but something “clicks” during time spent here that results in a near universal truth about VLJ’s efforts to meet the high demand for competent, no-cost civil legal services with the power of pro bono. For Ryan, pro bono work is important because often those community members most in need of legal support cannot afford it.
As summer rapidly exits stage left, we reflect with pride and admiration for our four interns. Indeed, we are immensely grateful to and for Ryan and his drive to learn, listen, and help. Qualities that will not only serve him well after law school, but that will be much needed for those seeking justice. Thank you, Ryan, for your summer of service!
