Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ) is proud to feature Asad Rizvi as its May Volunteer of the Month. Asad is Counsel, Labor and Employment, at Panasonic Corporation of North America (“PNA”). There, Asad counsels the business on issues involving the complete employee life cycle from recruitment to hiring, employee relations, performance management, discipline and separations as well as the development of workplace policies and procedures in accordance with the strategic needs of PNA and applicable law.
Asad has been an active and dedicated volunteer at VLJ’s Veterans Legal Wellness Clinic since shortly after starting with PNA in April 2019. He notes that with the strong encouragement of PNA Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary Jessica L. Hodkinson, the entire PNA Legal Department team has played a great role in the Clinic since its inception, with additional support from PNA’s law firm partners such as McGuireWoods LLP and Nukk-Freeman & Cerra, P.C.
Asad shared that one of the reasons he enjoys volunteering at the Veterans Legal Wellness Clinic is because he is able to provide assistance to a group of people who are often honored but not often helped. At the Clinic, Asad conducts holistic legal interviews with veterans to determine the root causes of their legal issues, provides advice and limited service, and makes meaningful referrals.
The COVID-19 Crisis has not stopped or diminished Asad’s and PNA’s commitment to providing pro bono assistance to our veterans. He has continued to participate in VLJ’s Virtual Veteran’s Legal Wellness Clinic, providing the same assistance to Veteran clients remotely. In fact, he has also recently increased his volunteer commitment to VLJ. He was recently given responsibility for coordinating logistics, management and volunteers for the Clinic within PNA Legal. He also joined the VLJ committee dedicated to planning VLJ’s largest fundraising event of the year, the Arts & Eats for Justice Gala.
Asad is also dedicated to pro bono work outside of VLJ. He coordinates PNA’s involvement with NJ LEEP, and he is always on the lookout for other opportunities to partner with non-profit organizations and Bar Associations to carry out PNA’s commitment of contribution to society.
Asad’s commitment to veterans is clear, as is his dedication to pro bono work. He believes that volunteering is important because “there is a disparity in access to legal services and by volunteering, he can make some improvement in someone’s life.”
We are so grateful to Asad for his dedication to VLJ and our Veteran clients. He is most deserving of this recognition. Thank you, Asad!
